Is it a clever choice to sell something that is already available for free at your competitor’s website ?
The answer is positively YES.
Why so ?
Because if people do need it, and they have money, and you overcome their objections, they will be ready to buy. It might even save them money to pay you.
The first reason to that is, even if ten other websites show up in the google results for your keywords and they all give away the same thing you’re selling… not a single one of these websites have a 100% market-attention share. I mean, as in “Google themselves don’t have a 100% market-attention share”. Some people on the Internet today - hundreds of millions of people ! - don’t have a clue what Google is ! And even more people will never use google search !
I bet 90% of all your prospects never heard about YourFreeCompetitor.com and never will. So you shouldn’t worry that much.
On the other hand,
Knowing that there’s a free alternative is not enough - most free forums are a complete mess. If I want to learn a skill, I will most likely buy a comprehensive guide to that skill, rather than read a bunch of disorganized threads in a forum.
On forums, and blogs, and communities, there are so many people who talk about stuff that they don’t really know, and arguing about every piece of theory that’s been written, that you can’t really learn anything effectively.
Being the guy that turns knowledge into actionable, practical wisdom makes you special. And that, will give you any right to SELL that wisdom.
Information is everywhere. What people crave today is wisdom.
